A collection of themed visuals to accompany Michael Nyman’s band playing a live half-hour set, inspired by the Great North Run. The performance premiered at The Sage, Gateshead and the Barbican, London.
A collection of themed visuals to accompany Michael Nyman’s band playing a live half-hour set, inspired by the Great North Run. The performance premiered at The Sage, Gateshead and the Barbican, London.
The Great North Run Cultural Programme commissioned Michael Nyman to compose a half hour piece based on the Great North Run. We were asked to provide visuals to accompany the piece. After meeting with Michael Nyman to discuss ideas, we visited Leeds Metropolitan University who provided insight into what happens inside the body during a marathon. We decided to abstractly theme the visuals around this, creating a unique sequence for each of the ten tracks. I produced the visuals on four tracks: GNR – extreme slow motion of BBC footage highlighting the physical and mental struggle of a marathon, Cellular – Bursts of light representing explosions of energy in the body, Mollecular – an microscopic-styled abstraction of the glycolysis process, Muscular – colourful display representing the gradual warming up, expansion and contraction of muscles. The remaining tracks were produced by Michael Siu and Loday Gonpo.

An ident for the introduction and ending of a promotional video for AMN AMRO.

The 3D elements and camera movements were created in 3D Studio Max and rendered out in RPF format. This allowed the camera data to be read by After Effects so the text could later be edited quickly.
