A 60 second television advert for Japanese clothing company Gunze Kids. It was aired in China during February 2010.
I created the first 40 seconds - the first two 'worlds'. The progression from 2D stop-motion style, to 2.5D, to 3D represents the growth and development of children as they get older.
I worked closely with Seed Animation Studio, who produced the final 20 second 3D world section.

Information
Three 20 second videos with animated characters laid over live footage. Set in Manchester, the creatures are lost and are trying to find they way to MediaCityUK. A helpful post-it note floats by leading them in the right direction.
These are teasers for a separate promotional architectural film for MediaCityUK. They are intended to build interest in the site due to be completed next year. The target audience are new media companies and include the BBC.
I began by designing the characters and once I received the footage made rough animatics for their actions. The character animation was created in Flash, and I used After Effects to grade the footage, add additional effects such as the shadows and motion blur, and create the post-it note title card. The 3D post-it note that floats past in each scene was created in 3D Studio Max. The footage was shot by Andrew Li and the sound was created by Craig Charsley.
I also sketched the designs for many of the little characters running around in the main film. These were translated into 3D models and animated by Frank Mansfield.

Information
A six minute animation of professional weightlifting... with a big difference! One of fifteen segments of a feature film parodying TV coverage of Olympic games. This premiered in Japanese cinemas August 2008, and has been screened at the Holland Animation Film Festival 2008.
Animal Lifting is written and directed by Richard Fenwick - one three international directors approached by the film's director, Riichiro Mashima. The wonderful character designs were created by Aohán Ó Braoin.
I animated the characters and camera work entirely in After Effects. The environment and characters were all built from 2D assets on 3D layers. In Photoshop I separated the characters into layers and created new poses and expressions based on the designs. I began blocking out the animation to a rough voiceover, kindly volunteered by Kevin Jones and Graham Bryan of Twisted Studios. Some welcome help was provided by Paulina Brinck who animated the spectators and Michael Siu who produced the final 'collapsing' shot in Maya.

Can they escape the unknown force devouring all in its path? A seven minute short thriller screened at festivals worldwide including Clermont, Annecy, onedotzero and RESFEST. Winner in two categories of the IFCT 2008 World Tour Award for Best Visual Innovation.
Written and directed by Richard Fenwick, the film was shot on 16mm film in the North East. A disused chemical works in Hartlepool and its surrounding area was used in the two day shoot.
Working in a small team of four, my job was to build, match move and animate 3D elements to the existing footage. Using tracking software we were able to extract camera data of each shot and import it directly into 3D Studio Max. This allowed us to model and texture objects to create artificial replicas of the environments. I rigged and animated a character to match the live action movements of the actors. To see the exact shots I worked on, view my shot list. Head of post-production, Loday Gonpo created the final 'wave' effect tearing through the 3D geometry, while Triangle Post Production worked on the final compositing.
You can see the film on Richard Fenwick's website.

Information
An informative, yet humorous animated short on what to do when attending a cinema. This film is being screened before all feature films at the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Written and directed by Richard Fenwick, this project was commissioned by Tyneside Cinema for the reopening of their newly refurbished building.
Michael Siu designed and built the stylised characters and environments in Maya. I helped out halfway through the project, adding some animation and particle effects for some of the shots. After the completion of the project, I re-rendered the scenes to include additional details and depth of field, motion blur to make for a more polished version.

A character effortlessly demonstrates how to put together a wardrobe, whilst a couple struggle to keep up. This film is now airing on MTV's QOOB.TV website.
One in a series of shorts called "Richard Fenwick's USERGUIDES" written and directed by Richard Fenwick. The character designs were created by Reluctant Hero and the 3D pieces of furniture animated by Loday Gonpo.
I animated the character in Flash, making use of the key poses provided. The voiceover was originally spoken in English with a bad Swedish accent, but was later replaced with cute-sounding gibberish. I provided the character sequence which was then composed into the scene alongside the 3D construction animations and split-screen live action.
See the film on MTV's QOOB.TV website.

Adaptation of an existing television advert to promote volunteering for people with disabilities. A set of 15, 10 and 5 second bumpers were created to be aired on the Community Channel as part of a week special.
Seed produced the original advert for the Community Channel. Making use of the existing assets, I created some new characters and props for the scenes. Using After Effects, I animated a new scene and tweaked the existing animation and camera movement. I also used Premiere to edit the sequences to a new voiceover and sound effects.

Information
With over 50,000 participants from 101 countries and 51 winners from around the world, Mass Animation is the largest global animation collaboration ever. This is their first film - a love story between an electric guitar and a violin, due for theatrical release in autumn 2009.
The shot I chose is just after Riff (an electric guitar) jumps up onto the amp he has dragged over. Expecting his new friends Sticks (a drum kit) and Keys (a keyboard) to jam along, Riff powers out his first few chords... he looks up after noticing no one else is joining in.
The initial animation process was completed via Facebook and Mass Animation's specially made application. We were provided with a detailed animatic and were given freedom to interpret the shots how we saw fit. The video is made up of three sections; the animatic for the shot, the winning shot I submitted, and the final shot – some minor alterations, additonal animation and camera work as requested by the director and my animation supervisor at ReelFX. Please note these are Maya playblasts and do not include the final texturing and lighting.
