Me
Photo
My name is Stephen Caie and I am an animator specialising in character animation and motion graphics. I live in the pleasant county Hertfordshire, which is a short train journey from central London. At present I am looking for freelance opportunities. I am half Chinese, a quarter English and a quarter Scottish. "Caie" is a Scottish name if you were wondering.
Background
Previously I was running an animation business with two friends, called moShine. We were based in Teesside in the North East and traded successfully for three years. It was a lot of hard work and late nights, but still great fun and an invaluable experience. However in June 2008 we decided to close the company and try something new.
Experience
I have worked with several high profile clients including director Richard Fenwick, MTV, Michael Nyman and ABN AMRO. More details on these projects can be seen in my Work section. Also take a look at my LinkedIn page.
Skills
The main software packages I use are Maya for 3D animation and After Effects for 2D animation, effects and compositing. I use Flash for hand drawn animation. I am also highly proficient with Premiere, Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Encore and Audition. I have a keen eye for detail and strive to produce work of exceptional quality. My nice Boxx workstation helps to make this possible. I have a shiny Master's degree in Computer Animation too.
Interests
When I allow myself time away from the computer, I am usually playing console games with my siblings and friends. I also enjoy watching Anime television series, playing guitar and occasionally making my own digital music. I like to create rather wacky personalised cards and animations for birthdays.
Write
The purpose of this website is to tell you a little bit about me, what I do and how to get in contact. I have also included links to websites that may be of interest.
Construction
I designed and built this optimised website to CSS coding standards. It has been tested with the W3C CSS Validator and passes as XHTML 1.0 Transitional and CSS level 2.1. To achieve this I had to avoid using javascript. After trawling through some helpful websites I have found alternative methods to create button rollovers and embed flash videos. For more information, refer to the web design tutorials on my Links page.
Media
The videos use a Flash video player to play. This is a modified version of Flash Video Player 2.5 by Jeroen Wijering and all credit goes to him. Minor tweaks include volume control functionality, personalised loading animation and various cosmetic modifications.
The music on my showreel was composed by myself, recorded on my electric guitar and edited digitally. Be thankful I didn't sing - I hope you like it.
Copyright of all videos, images and audio on this website that I do not have copyright to belongs to the respective client.
Navigation
I have included accessibility options to navigate the site. Pressing a combination of ALT and SHIFT and KEY (firefox) or ALT and KEY and ENTER (explorer) will take you to the following sections:

Thanks
I would like to thank Richard Fenwick for all his guidance and advice.
Speak
I like designs that have thought or meaning put into them. The logo hovering above my name symbolises a few aspects about me.
Colours
The three large segments are coloured red, green and blue to represent the primary colours of the additive colour system. This symbolises my manipulation of light (i.e pixels on a computer screen) to create the illusion of movement.
Shape
The asymmetrical shape of the logo has an organic quality, much like that of a spark or explosion. This represents my creativity and ideas, and ever evolving self-education.
Segments
The sizes of the three large segments represent my ethnic background – I am half Chinese, a quarter Scottish and a quarter English. I like to think of the three smaller colours of equal size to represent my working values – honesty, respect and trust.
